University of Strathclyde wins UK Business School of Year award

Strathclyde Business School has been named the UK’s Business School of the Year by the Times Higher Education (THE) for its outstanding overall performance and its innovative and entrepreneurial outlook.

The prestigious award was presented at the higher education awards in London which recognise universities that have demonstrated exceptional performance against specific indicators, including innovation, teaching, research and student experience. Judges also assess the strength of partnerships with the business community, and the positive impact of these links.

It is the latest in a series of high-profile awards for Strathclyde, which was named THE UK Entrepreneurial University of the Year in 2014, and UK University of the Year in 2013.

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal of the University, said: “As a leading, international university, we are committed to working side-by-side with business, industry and the public sector to find solutions to global challenges, drive innovation, and nurture a new generation of entrepreneurial business people.

“This award is a tremendous achievement for Strathclyde Business School and reflects the hard work and commitment of colleagues across the University in making a positive difference for our students, our partners, and the global communities we serve.”

The news comes just a month after the Business School celebrated the re-opening of its state-of-the-art building, which has been transformed with a £23 million investment, and in the 50th anniversary year of its internationally-renowned MBA programme.

It is one of only a handful of business schools in the world to be triple-accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, EQUIS – the European quality assurance scheme, and the Association of MBAs.
Professor David Hillier, Executive Dean of Strathclyde Business School, said, “We are delighted to be named ‘Business School of the Year’. The judges were looking for a business school, which had built strong links with the business community and wanted to see evidence of bold and creative strategies which have helped the business school flourish.

“This award is testimony to the hard work and dedication of all our Business School and wider University staff who ensure we continue to be a pioneering institution of global standing within a leading international technological university.”

The Awards judges cited the Business School’s unique Growth Advantage Programme, which delivers practical learning to the leaders of ambitious businesses looking to scale up, as a “substantial reason” for the win, and indicated they were “particularly impressed” with the School’s level of external engagement.
They also highlighted the School’s strong performance in the latest Research Excellence Framework, and indicated they were particularly impressed with the impact of a research project which reinforced the business case for employers to adopt the living wage.
