AITM News and Events >> Regional workshop on the APN funded project “Groundwater Sustainability in Asian Cities”

The first regional workshop of the project titled “Enhancing the groundwater management capacity in Asian cities through the development and application of groundwater sustainability index in the context of climate change”, funded by Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) through  project CBA2013-06NSY-Shrestha, held during 16-17 January 2014 at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand.

The project seeks to enhance understanding among policy makers on the Groundwater Sustainability Index and Driver, Pressure, State, Impact, Response (DPSIR) framework, as the analytical framework for achieving sound groundwater management. The workshop was jointly implemented by AIT, Thailand; Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan; Asian Institute of Technology and Management (AITM), Nepal; and International Research Center for River Basin Environment (ICRE), University of Yamanashi, Japan. Experts and policy makers from eight countries including Thailand, India, Indonesia, Japan, Lao, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Nepal attended the workshop. Over twenty AIT students also participated in the first day of the workshop.

Prof. Sivanappan Kumar, Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the participants after Dr. Sangam Shrestha, an Assistant Professor of Water Engineering and Management, briefed the workshop objectives. Prof. Kumar highlighted AIT’s dedication to Sustainable Development issues and linked the workshop to its two academic programs of Water Engineering and Management (WEM) and Urban Environmental Management (UEM). Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Mukand S Babel of Water Engineering and Management (WEM) stated the issue of groundwater abstraction can be described as the ‘tragedy of the commons’ and remarked that moving from “safe yield” to “sustainable yield” could be a way forward.

Dr. Akio Takemoto, the Director and Dr. Jariya Boonjawaat, Member of Scientific Planning Group represented APN in the workshop. They provided a brief history of AIN and an overview of its activities.

Dr. Vishnu Prasad Pandey, a faculty member at AITM, represented AITM in the workshop. He made presentations on “Framework for Groundwater Sustainability Index” and “DPSIR analysis of groundwater environment”.
