In the context of a five-year project titled “Hydro-microbiological approach for water security in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal” – led by Institute of Engineering in Nepal and University of Yamanashi in Japan – provisionally accepted for funding under SATREPS Program (http://www.jst.go.jp/global/english/kadai/index.html)” of the Japanese Government, a SATREPS Mission Team consisting of officials from JST, JICA and University of Yamanashi (UY)visited Kathmandu during 9-20 September, 2013.

The visit was for pre-project evaluation of the research-focused ODA (Official Development Assistant) project, in which Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) have joined hands to promote international joint research targeting global issues.

The Mission Team visited Asian Institute of Technology and Management (AITM)on September 15, 2013 for a bilateral meeting to explore prospects of AITM’s involvementin the project as a “Project Implementation Partner”.Other confirmed partners include Kathmandu Valley Water Supply Management Board (KVWSMB), Kathmandu UpatyakaKhanepani Limited (KUKL), Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Center of Research for Environment Energy and Water (CREEW) and The Small Earth Nepal (SEN).

The Mission Team briefed AITM team about the SATREPS Program as well as outline of the provisionally accepted project. The Executive Director of AITM briefed the Mission Team about AITM and its academic offerings and then expressed a great interest to be a part of the project.
The Director of AITM shed light on AITM’s mission and vision to be a “center of academic excellence” through promoting research activities.
He also shared current strength and capacity of AITM in terms of carrying out research on water and environment sector and introduced the faculty members related to the field. Dr. Madhav Narayan Shrestha suggested potential areas/activities in the project in which AITM may be able to contribute. Other faculty members added their views in this regard.

Members from Japan side consisted of Mr. RyoheiAnzai (JICA Headquarter), Ms. Mari Takagi (JST), Prof. FutabaKazama (UY), Dr. Tadashi Toyama (UY) and Mr. Shigeo Sakai (pre-project evaluation consultant).From AITM side, Mr. BhupadasRajbhandari (Executive Director), Mr. PramodPradhan (Director), Dr. Madhav Narayan Shrestha (Coordinator, AIT UG Program), Dr. GehendraPurushDhakal (Coordinator, MBA Program), Dr. M.P. Bhatta (faculty member), Dr. Bal B. Parajuli (Head of Civil Engineering Department), Dr. Vishnu Prasad Pandey (faculty member) and Dr. M. SamanDassanayake (visiting faculty) were present in the meeting. Dr. Rabin Malla, Executive Director of CREEW, was also present in the meeting.

The bilateral meeting, coordinated by Dr. Vishnu Prasad Pandey (a faculty member at AITM), was followed by lunch and a short visit to AITM’s laboratory facilities.
