AITM Research Projects >> Hydro-Sociality Assessment of Budhi Gandaki Hydropower Project

The Budhi Gandaki Hydropower Project (BGHP) is planned to be implemented during the time when the effects of climate change (CC) are prominent and Nepal is one of the highly vulnerable countries. This research has developed and applied a comprehensive modeling framework integrating a hydrologic model (HEC-HMS), trend analysis tool (RClimDex), extreme events analysis tool (IHA), a reservoir simulation model (HEC-ResSim), and a social survey to assess CC impacts on the BGHP. It has made use of an inter-disciplinary approach to understand existence and extent of climate variability/change in the project watershed; projected further changes in climatic variable in the area; impacts of the projected climate changes on hydrology, water availability, energy production, and structural design; and prioritize adaptation strategies to deal with the impacts. Such a multidisciplinary methodology can be an example for application in other catchments in Nepal with similar socioeconomic, topographic, and climatic conditions.
