Dr. M. Saman Dassanayake, a Professor of Human Resources Management at University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, delivered a talk on “Building human resources architecture for greening the workplace” in the 8th AITM Public Seminar held at AITM premise on October 25, 2013. In the context of prominent environmental issues have drawn markedly the attention of organizations operating in different parts of the world to revisit their processes and practices of producing goods and services, he described how “greening the workplace” could be an organization-wider intervention. With a couple of cases, he demonstrated how the greening the workplace demands aligning people practices to appreciate and live greening, from the point of recruitment of job candidate to the time of them leaving the organization.

His talk basically highlighted following five critical areas with specific reference to manufacturing and services sector organizations in Sri Lanka: (i) what greening the workplace really encapsulates? (ii) how organizations respond to climate change? (iii) what are the emerging organizational structures for supporting greening the workplace? (iv) what is the role of people practices in building competencies in employees for greening the workplace? (v) lessons for organizations and people.
